Florespa Fencing Club (FFC), is a profit corporation, that provides Olympic fencing sport from age 5 to adult. Initially, our club was created in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil in 1993. In 2011 our club was reopening in Miami, FL. The club is specializing in teaching the weapon of Foil and Epee, these has produced many successful fencers.


Mr. Luis E. Bretones

  • Graduated of Higher Education for the Deaf (Higher Pedagogic Institute, Habana Cuba 1990)

  • Certificate of Psychotherapy (University of Habana Cuba 1990).

  • Director Credential Certified (Florida Child Care and Education Program 2016).

  • Currently doing the Master course in Special Education at Nova Southeast University Florida USA.



Mr. Bretones is a certified coach by USFA, who loves his athletes and the sport of Fencing. Since childhood, he has been involved in sports as an athlete. He competed in all the national championships winning high standing positions in his category obtaining medals by a team in all the competitions. At the age of 11, he started fencing in the city Santiago de Cuba, Cuba. In two occasions during national tournaments, he ranked 5th and 6th in the individual foil category in the categories of Cadet and Junior and in the rest of the national competitions that he participated was among the best 16 competitors in his modality. At the age of 15 years old, he won the second place in his state, qualifying to participate in the most important international championship in Cuba called Ramon Font in Memorial that took place in the state of Pinar del Rio in 1981.


In 1993, Mr. Bretones founded Florespa Fencing Club in the city of Juiz de Fora in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. His students got excellent results at the state and national level. In 1997, Mr. Bretones was promoted by the Brazilian Para-Olympic Committee to be the Para-Olympic National Coordinator in the wheelchair fencing sport. He participated with the Brazilian national team at the first World Championship, which took place in Bonn, Germany in 1998.


Our coach moved to Miami in 2001, from this time Mr. Bretones had been working hard to reopen his club, but it was not until 2011 that Florespa Fencing Club restarts serving the Miami Community. Nowadays, he is a veteran competitive athlete in the United States obtaining outstanding results, such as a silver medal and two bronzes in the Florida Sunshine State Tournament, category veteran mixed foil. In 2016, our coach competed in an international Pan-American interclub tournament in San Jose Costa Rica obtaining a bronze medal in foil veteran category. He also competed in national championships obtaining the 20th place among the 64 athletes in the veteran men foil category during a tournament celebrated in Wisconsin during the same year.  Mr. Bretones’ work begins to stand out in the state of Florida because of the results obtained by his athletes (1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronzes). This year, during the last national youth tournament held in Baltimore, Maryland, one of his athletes won the 9th place among 69 competitors in the category Y-10 Men Epee. Our director aims to highlight the participation of our club in national and international championships.

Mr. Rolando Diaz Garcia

Fencing Coach

Mr. Diaz is a certified coach by USFA who has 24 years of experience in the Fencing Sport. He loves his athletes and the Sport of Fencing​. He teaches beginners, intermediate and advanced fencers. The coach has taught the style of Eppee and Foil in various countries with amazing results. 



In Cuba he was a fencing instructor for 20 years, participating as a coach for the national team of Cuba for 8 years in the style of Men's Epee. In the United States the team he led obtained 16 medals in different categories by individuals and the whole team. Mr. Diaz has participated in different international tournaments winning over 25 medals. Within those results, the most significant is the silver medal in the individual category for Men's Epee in the tournament "Copa del Mundo Vela de Ettorana" in 2001 and 2002. 

In 2005 he participated in the Central American Juvenil tournament in Cartagena Colombia obtaining a Gold medal in the team category and a silver medal in the individual selection in Men's Epee. In 2007 he participated as a coach for the national team of Cuba of Men's Epee in the Central American Tournament in Rio de Jeniero, Brazil. There they earned the gold medal as a team and 2nd place as an individual in Men's Epee. In 2009, he participated in the Campeonato del Mundo in Turkey winning the 6th place as an individual in Men's Epee. 

During 2010 to 2014, Mr. Diaz was responsible for the sport of fencing in the stape of Tepic, Nayarrit, Mexico. Our coach excelled with great results earning the winning title of the National Championship of Mexico with a total of 20 medals in the individual and team categories in the style of Foil, Epee, and Saber. Mr. Diaz is very excited to be part of Florespa Fencing Club and we are honored to have him as part of our team.
